Fluoxetine Drug Information

Fluoxetine is used for the treatment of mental illness; it can help those that suffer from depression, OCD, bulimia nervosa and even panic disorder. Fluoxetine is often used with other drugs such as olanzapine to treat people suffering from bipolar disorders and can be used in patients that suffer from deep depression that can not find relief in other medications.  There are other conditions that are treated with this drug but they are all decided by your doctor on whether or not it would be a good option for you.

Fluoxetine is a medication that is in the group of serotonin reuptake inhibitors otherwise known as (SSRIs).  This medication helps the increased production of serotonin in the brain that helps with those people that suffer from chemical imbalance.

The drug is available in many forms such as:

  • Syrup and solutions
  • Capsule and delayed reaction capsule
  • Tablet

No matter the form that is prescribed to you, you must take care and follow all dosage information as it is provided to you. Do not try to change your dosage, go off the medicine or skip any doses without first getting in contact with your physician. There are things that need to be taken into consideration before you stop using this medication.  Always follow the advice of your physician. When you start or stop the medication it will be done in small steps so you can easily adjust whether it be an adjustment to start the medication or and adjustment to stop it. There are many reasons for people to use this medication and if it is decided that it can benefit you, you should only take it as the doctor tells you.

If you stop your medication you could start to see serious side effects which include:

  • The inability to sleep, or wake
  • Irritability
  • Mood disorders and uncontrollability
  • Hallucinations

It is very important as you can see that you take Fluoxetine as your doctor advises. You will start feeling better in about 4-6 weeks and the previously noted problems will start reducing until one day you no longer feel the need for the drug. When you feel that your mood has come under control do not stop taking your medication, speak to your doctor and he will guide you through the process of stopping the medication in a safe and easy manner.
